ERA

Pillar 2 of four

Agency: What Now, Not Why Me

Agency is the second pillar of ERA (Emotional Resilience Architecture), the four-pillar framework created by coach Kate Stapleton. It follows Flame, and it is where reflection turns into movement.

What this pillar is

Agency is the ability to keep moving in the face of adversity. The whole pillar turns on one substitution: asking "What now?" instead of "Why me?"

That is not the same as being fine. ERA is not toxic positivity, and grief is never rushed here. You acknowledge the pain fully and you still take the next step — the two are allowed to happen at once.

The core principle is narrower than it first sounds: you control the trajectory of your life, not every outcome. Plenty of what happens to you was never yours to decide. The direction you travel afterwards usually is.

Why it matters for resilience

"Why me?" is an understandable question and a closed one — there is rarely an answer, and looking for it keeps you standing in the same place. "What now?" is open. It has an answer every single time, even when the honest answer is small.

Agency also leaks. People hand pieces of it away quietly — to other people's opinions, to situations they have stopped questioning, to decisions made by default rather than on purpose. Noticing where that is happening is most of the work.

And agency is hardest to reach exactly when you need it most, which is why this pillar asks you to build your plans while things are calm rather than improvising them in the middle of an upheaval.

What you'll work on in the course

Four lessons, each a short video plus workbook exercises — roughly 30–40 minutes including writing time, at whatever pace suits you.

  1. Lesson 1

    Understanding Agency

Establish what agency actually means in your life, and where you currently stand with it.

  2. Lesson 2

    Exercising Agency Through Intentional Decisions

Work through "Where am I surrendering my power?" and finish with one concrete next intentional step.

  3. Lesson 3

    Protecting Agency

Build your Minimum Functioning protocol: a pre-made plan for major upheaval covering the essentials — children, pets — the people who can help, and encouragement to reach out to professionals.

  4. Lesson 4

    Maintaining Agency Under Pressure

Pull the pillar together into My Agency Blueprint, a capstone page you can actually reach for when pressure arrives.

Questions to reflect on

You don't need the course to start here. Take one at a time.

  • Where in your life are you currently asking "Why me?" — and what would "What now?" look like there?
  • Where are you surrendering your power, and to whom?
  • What is one concrete step you could take this week that is genuinely yours to take?
  • If everything went sideways tomorrow, who are the people you would actually call?
  • Which decisions in your life are being made by default rather than on purpose?
